Regulating fisheries requires finding a balance between top-down and bottom-up participation, knowledge gathering, and decisions. McClanahan outlines some of the advances in understanding and improving social-ecological organization in African marine fisheries.
Tim McClanahan’s work has focused on providing solutions to human-coral reef fisheries interaction in developing countries. He is a coral reef ecosystem ecologist with broad research interests spanning social and ecological fields. He is a Senior Conservation Zoologist for the Wildlife Conservation Society and has spent most of his professional life living and working in the western Indian Ocean.
