Althea Marks

Althea currently evaluates illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing risks within company supply chains. Trained in environmental science and marine ecology, Althea transitioned to data science after discovering the critical role that data management and analysis play in advancing solutions to complex environmental problems. Day-to-day she enjoys the puzzle of combing data sources and tools to produce clean and reproducible analyses. Prior to joining COS, Althea was a Data Science Fellow at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) at UC Santa Barbara, where she worked to improve systems tracking citations of datasets within a data repository network. She earned her Master’s degree at Cal State Fullerton studying the water filtration functions of restored native oysters and farmed non-native oysters in California. When Althea is not obsessing about data, she is either hiking uphill with skis, identifying plants on iNaturalist, or biking over granite rocks depending on the season.
