An opinion piece by Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions’ co-director Fio Micheli and Samantha Murray from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography was recently published in the San Francisco Chronicle. In the op-ed, Micheli and Murray address how California is addressing climate impacts to the ocean, in light of the “Blue COP” UN climate negotiations in Madrid Dec. 2-13.
“Californians should be proud of our international climate leadership,” Micheli explains. “Our groundbreaking, science-based statewide network of marine protected areas — now covering 16% of state waters – is the first of its kind in the United States. We just might light the way as the world grapples with how to best adapt to and build resilience and resistance against the ongoing impacts of climate change.”
