COS presents research & solutions at Ocean Sciences Meeting

coastline San Diego

Members of the Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions team and project collaborators traveled to the 2020 Ocean Sciences Meeting in San Diego, California last month to present research and ocean-based solutions. The meeting, hosted by the American Geophysical UnionThe Oceanography Society, and the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography, convened ocean researchers, communicators, educators and policymakers from around the world. Over the course of the week, the COS team highlighted work related to the Palau National Marine Sanctuary along with communication and education projects.

Upon their return from the conference, the team reflected on key lessons from the experience. These lessons and conversations with other ocean professionals will serve as next steps on pathways towards ocean solutions.

"It was wonderful to reconnect with mentors and meet students from around the world who are working on ocean issues. I was inspired to see the many talks throughout the week that focused on interdisciplinary problem-solving and communicating science to a variety of audiences. I'm hopeful for the next decade of ocean science!" -- Communications Intern Laura Anderson

Inspiring Conservation Efforts with Meaningful Opportunity through Stanford. Natasha Batista

"I had a great experience connecting with old friends and mentors, and presenting an eLightning poster at the OSM 2020. It was exciting to see the numerous talks focused on targeted solutions and interdisciplinary approaches to tackling ocean challenges, and tutorials discussing diversity and inclusion in ocean sciences. One of my highlights was listening to Nainoa Thompson’s powerful opening plenary speech, and his emphasis on viewing the ocean as something that connects people and continents, not divides them." -- MUIR Fellow Natasha Batista
